In this session, our CEO, Shubha Dasgupta, takes us through the weekly Market Update. He kicks off the meeting with rate updates for Prime Lenders and Alt Lenders. Some economists now think the Bank of Canada rate could go twice as high as it was pre-pandemic.
The bank’s deputy governor told attendees at a monetary policy conference that an uptick in household debt was “worrisome” and that the bank was “prepared to act forcefully” to ensure inflation doesn’t run too hot for too long. Shubha states that the yield on the five-year bonds topped 2.5 percent for the first time since the pandemic this week, which is pushing fixed mortgage rates well above three and even four percent in response. Effective January 1st, 2023, the government is committing to providing comments within 45 days to any applicants for housing developments across all ministries.
Shubha highlights that the government is increasing the Non-Resident Speculation Tax rate to 20 percent, closing loopholes to fight tax avoidance and expanding the tax apply provincewide. He ends the call by answering all questions!
